In February 2024, a lithium battery stored in a backyard shed in Sumter caught fire. The fire destroyed the shed and spread to the neighboring property, damaging the fence and the roof and eaves of the house next door.

Midlands Restoration Services assessed both properties the same morning and documented the damage with more than 140 photos and videos. On the first property, our crew handled the full demolition, using heavy equipment to clear the burned structure and debris down to a clean slab, and then completed the repairs. On the neighboring home, we repaired the fire damage to the fence, roof and eaves.

Each homeowner had a different insurance carrier, so we documented each claim separately and provided photos and scope to both adjusters.

Takeaway: Charge lithium batteries (e-bikes, tools, scooters) away from structures, and never leave them charging unattended in a shed or garage.
